Senior citizens account for more than 90 percent of flu-related deaths annually, and Town of Hempstead officials are working to mitigate the problem.

Town Supervisor Kate Murray visited the Levittown Senior Center on Tuesday to talk about free flu vaccines being provided by the Town of Hempstead, the Nassau University Medical Center and the South Nassau Communities Hospital.

“Senior citizens are at a higher risk of suffering complications stemming from the flu, and providing flu vaccines with no out-of-pocket cost will help keep our golden-aged residents happy and healthy,” Murray said. “I urge all our seniors to take advantage of this great flu vaccination program offered by the Town of Hempstead in partnership with the Nassau University Medical Center and South Nassau Communities Hospital.”

Murray added that 1,000 flu vaccines will be made available for senior citizens (ages 60 and older), at no out-of-pocket cost. Participating hospitals will bill seniors’ insurance companies, and co-payments not be charged, she added.

“Spending just a few minutes with a health care professional to get a flu vaccine could have a positive impact on your life for years to come,” said Town of Hempstead Councilman Gary Hudes. “I encourage all our senior citizens to take advantage of this great program.”

Arthur A. Gianelli, president and CEO of the NuHealth System, which operates the Nassau University Medical Center, said the company is proud to be partnering with the town. “Seniors are particularly at high risk for suffering complications of the flu and vaccines help to minimize the symptoms of those who catch it,” he added.

Joseph A. Quagliata, president and CEO at the South Nassau Communities Hospital, agreed. “Influenza is a serious disease, and people of any age can get it," he said. "To protect yourself, as well as your family and your friends, I strongly urge all residents to get the flu shot.”
