Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly brought the joy of reading to third-grade students at Archer Street Elementary School in the Freeport School District on December 12. More than 100 children’s books were distributed during her special visit, creating a memorable experience for the young readers.

Expressing her passion for reading, Donnelly shared with the students her personal connection to literature. “I’ve always loved reading. In fact, before I decided to pursue a career in criminal justice, I studied English in college because I could fully immerse myself in the pages of my favorite novels and explore new and exciting worlds,” said Donnelly. She explained to the third graders why she donates books each year as part of the winter book drive, emphasizing her desire to pass on the love of reading to the next generation.

The students warmly welcomed the district attorney and expressed their gratitude for the generous book donation. Donnelly spoke to the importance of the winter book drive, hoping that the books would bring joy to the students during their winter break and contribute to their ongoing literacy education provided by the dedicated educators at Archer Street.

During the visit, students had the opportunity to peruse tables adorned with a variety of books, including graphic novels, classic tales, autobiographies, and more. The selection allowed each student to choose their favorite book to take home.

Assistant Superintendent for Educational and Administrative Services Dr. Helen Kanellopoulos highlighted the significance of instilling a lifelong love of reading in students. She expressed appreciation to District Attorney Donnelly for her support of the district’s goals and for her contribution to fostering a love for reading among students.

Engaging with the district attorney, students asked questions such as, “What is your favorite book?” and “Do you read a lot of books at home?” The interaction provided a unique opportunity for students to connect with the person behind the generous book donation.

Board of Education President Maria Jordan-Awalom, instrumental in securing the book donation for Archer Street, expressed pride in the students benefiting from the program. She noted, “The district attorney has been hosting a book drive for several years as her way of promoting literacy. It makes me so proud that Archer Street students were able to benefit from the program this year.”
