The National Association of Music Merchants has once again named the Freeport School District among its list of the Best Communities for Music Education.

The awards program, founded in 1999, recognizes more than 700 schools around the nation that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education for all students.

“Our talented, amazing students spread joy and inspiration whenever they perform,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham. “Freeport Public Schools is dedicated to educating the whole child. This award recognizes our commitment to supporting a successful music program and the dedication of our staff and students.”

The NAMM is a nonprofit organization that works to support teachers, parents and community leaders with resources and programs to advance music studies. This is the third year in a row that the NAMM has recognized the Freeport School District.

The Best Communities for Music Education awards program is conducted through the Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas, who analyze data sent in from school districts and evaluate each districts’ music program. The researchers take into account: teacher qualifications, student demographics, program participation, requirements for graduation, music facilities and the district’s budget for music education.

Ruth Breidenbach, director of Arts and Community Relations for the district, said the district took great pride in the consecutive recognition from NAMM, adding that it reflected the efforts and excellence of the district’s music programs.

“Our music team is the most progressive and innovative in the field and creates opportunities for unique experiences,” she said. “Our student musicians are ambassadors of the district when they perform in our village, county, state, region and nation.”
