Freeport celebrates annual district awards

The SCOPE 23rd Annual School District Awards dinner, held at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook on March 18, was an evening of recognition and celebration. Over 174 individuals were honored for their exceptional service and dedication to their respective school districts.

Among the recipients, Freeport School District Assistant Superintendent for Educational and Administrative Services, Dr. Helen Kanellopoulos, received the Administrator Service Award. Transition Coordinator Patricia Desatnick and Charles Gilreath, a physical education teacher and varsity track coach at Freeport High School, were also recognized with the Teacher Service Award.

“Congratulations on these well-deserved recognitions,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham. “Your dedication and service to our students and school district are appreciated and have a significant impact on our students and their success.”

Dr. Kanellopoulos, formerly Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services and Special Education, is lauded as an innovative advocate for health and wellness. She tirelessly works to provide access to mental health care for students and families, spearheading initiatives such as calming rooms, wellness centers, and flexible furniture learning spaces throughout the district.

Ms. Desatnick’s commitment ensures students not only graduate successfully but are also prepared for life beyond high school. Actively seeking opportunities to enhance students’ readiness for the real world, she is deemed an invaluable asset to the district.

Meanwhile, Ms. Gilreath, recognized as Coach of the Year, is praised for his unwavering dedication and inspirational impact. His passion for teaching and coaching creates an atmosphere of motivation and positivity, evident both in the classroom and on the field.
