Last month, Senator Kevin Thomas proudly announced that Marie Carmel Houanche was selected as the distinguished 2023 New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame Inductee for the 6th District.

With deep admiration, Senator Thomas expressed the honor he felt in nominating Ms. Houanche, a fellow Freeport resident, recognizing her exceptional commitment to the nation during her tenure in the U.S. Army.

“It is my privilege to recognize [Marie’s] unwavering dedication to our country during her time in the U.S. Army,” Thomas said. “May we always remember and honor those who have given so much. She is the embodiment of true service and sacrifice.”

Thomas concluded his appraisal by extending a heartfelt congratulations for what he said was a “well-deserved recognition.”

Houanche’s military service in the United States Army is marked by her role as a commissioned officer, holding the position of Second Lieutenant and Assistant Chaplain. She served within the 8th Medical Brigade, Army Nurse Corps, and was assigned to the 344th Combat Support Hospital. Her service included activation and deployment to critical regions such as Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan, showcasing her dedication and resilience in the face of challenging circumstances.

Guided by her faith, Houanche’s journey extends beyond her military service. Born in Haiti and raised in Paris, she immigrated to the United States, where her passion for learning led her to attain an Associate Degree in Nursing from Manhattan Community College, followed by a bachelor’s degree from Medgar Evers College. Her pursuit of knowledge continued at Downstate University, culminating in a master’s degree in Health Care Administration.

Presently, Houanceh serves as the Co-Pastor of L’Eglise Baptiste Des Seraphim and L’Eglise De la Nouvelle Jerusalem. Her involvement extends to executive board committees for organizations like the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the National Action Network (NAN); here, she actively contributes to initiatives such as the Haitian Sports Foundation, providing medical, cultural, and emotional support.

In response to the 2010 earthquake, Ms. Houanche played a vital role in the cleanup efforts and established the Houanche-Wasembeck Foundation. She further founded the Church of God and Christian Children Academy, focusing on the education, health, and wellness resources in Haiti. This ambitious project included a church, school, soup kitchen, orphanage, retreat center, and vocational Bible school.

As a dedicated advocate and community servant, Houanche holds positions such as Vice President/Branch Member of the West Nassau Chapter of the NAN in Valley Stream, New York; NAACP Health Education Committee Chair; HAPAC of NY; and is a member of the American Legion William Clinton Post #342.

Having resided in Freeport for over 25 years, Houanche, a widowed mother of five adult children, stands as a proud and influential member of her community. She leaves an indelible mark through her multifaceted contributions and unwavering dedication to service.
