Veterans Day event in Freeport this week

The Village of Freeport and William Clinton Story Post No. 342 is gearing up to commemorate Veterans Day with a special event at the Freeport Recreation Center on Nov 10 starting at 10:30 a.m. This heartfelt occasion will honor the brave individuals who have selflessly served their nation, and the event promises to be a poignant tribute to these dedicated veterans.

The event is set to feature a range of dignitaries, including Village of Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy, who will be sharing remarks to express the village’s gratitude for the sacrifices made by its veterans. Additionally, the Freeport High School Navy Jr. ROTC will be on hand to pay their respects and add a touch of patriotic spirit to the event.

One of the special honorees for this Veterans Day event is Albert D. Grover, a World War II veteran and the son of Albert Walter Grover, a WWI veteran. Albert D. Grover is not only celebrated for his service to the United States but is also recognized for his legendary contributions as a Freeport Boat Builder and a world record-holding sailor.

Another distinguished veteran, Andrew Hardwick, will be recognized for his service as a former Mayor of Freeport, a Past Freeport Fire Captain, and a former Deputy Commissioner of Nassau County Parks and Recreation. He also served as a United States Army Military Police officer assigned to the 55th Military Police Company in the Republic of Korea.

Dr. Marie C. Houanche, a Universal Theology Seminary graduate, an ordained Minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and a Master of Health Care Administration from SUNY Downstate University, will be honored for her remarkable service as a Military Surgical Nurse in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Marie Houanche currently serves as the Chaplain for William Clinton Story Post No. 342.

Ed Arias, a 22-year Veteran of the United States Marine Corps, an alumnus of the Wounded Warrior Project, and a member of the Travis Manion Foundation, will also be recognized for his service and dedication to supporting fellow veterans.

The event will be a touching commemoration of these exceptional individuals and all veterans who have served their country. It is set to include various ceremonies, including an invocation, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the National Anthem, all leading to the heartfelt moments of honoring and dedication prayers. The event will conclude with the retiring of the colors and an opportunity for attendees to enjoy some fun and refreshments.
