Kaminsky gets the nod for State Assembly
Will face Eramo, Solomon in Democratic primary
Todd Kaminsky, a former Assistant U.S. District Attorney who is running for State Assembly, was endorsed by the Nassau County Democratic Committee at its convention in Mineola last week, setting the stage for a crowded September primary.
Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg, who announced last month that he would not seek another term after 25 years representing the 20th District, will vacate his Assembly seat in December.
Kaminsky, a Democrat who grew up in Long Beach, announced his campaign on April 29, a day after Weisenberg, 80, said he would not seek re-election.
Weisenberg endorsed Kaminsky on May 5. On May 27, the Nassau County Democratic Committee endorsed Kaminsky by a 3-to-1 margin. The nomination means that Kaminsky — who resigned as a federal prosecutor a day after Weisenberg’s announcement — will face Long Beach City Councilman Anthony Eramo and Long Beach attorney Robert Solomon, who both announced their candidacies last month, in a Sept. 9 primary.
In order to get on the ballot, a candidate must gather 500 signatures from registered Democrats. Kaminsky, 36, said that he garnered more than 2,000 signatures in just the first four days of petitioning to get on the September primary ballot. To date, he said he has raised more than $120,000 for his campaign.
“I am so proud of what our campaign accomplished this weekend, and am humbled by the outpouring of support we’ve received so early in our campaign,” Kaminsky said in a statement. “Everywhere we go – from Long Beach to the Five Towns to Point Lookout – the reaction to the campaign and our commitment to improving Sandy recovery, responsive government, and affordability for all families has been very positive. I’ve already met many voters at their doors, walking from home to home, and am so excited to meet many, many more as the campaign continues into the summer.”
Solomon, a Lido Beach resident and former school board trustee, was the Long Beach Democratic Committee’s pick for the race at the convention, but did not receive enough votes from 20th District committee members. Solomon did not return calls for comment as the Herald went to press.
