Wants peace and quiet

To the Editor:

Planes, planes, and more planes, flying overhead constantly.

I remember a time when planes out of John F. Kennedy airport stopped flying at 11 p.m. and didn’t start again until 7 a.m. the next day. For the last few months, the planes leaving JFK are flying over our Nassau communities constantly, day and night. The main takeoff runway now being used sends planes right down the middle of Lynbrook and directly over my home. They start early in the morning, usually stop in mid-morning, and then start up again in late afternoon into the night. The noise of these low-flying planes is so bad, with flights leaving every minute, that you can’t hear the TV, have a conversation outside or go to sleep when you go to bed.

When will this all stop? I’m glad that I’m not trying to sell my house because no one would buy it for what I want with the planes flying directly overhead. We need our elected officials to fight for our peace and quiet.

Pub crawl was a great success

To the Editor:

Last Saturday was the first pub crawl of its kind in East Rockaway, and what a great afternoon it was!

We were able to celebrate how far our “Community by the Bay” has come since Superstorm Sandy by paying it forward to the victims of the August floods in Baton Rouge, La.

More than 250 ER4LA pub crawlers came out for this important fundraiser, and although the results are not fully tallied, we are thrilled to report that the amount donated to Together Baton Rouge will exceed $10,000!

Many share credit for the success of this event. From our neighbors and ticket buyers to our sponsor, Cord Meyer Development, and those who helped promote the event to the five establishments that donated gift cards and free drinks — we are in awe of your generosity. It’s important to acknowledge Michael’s Porthole, Barrier Brewing Co., Reel, Lazy Lobster and Althouse 1848, which all did a wonderful job hosting the afternoon’s festivities and ensured that everything ran seamlessly.

In addition, a special thank you to Mayor Bruno Romano and the East Rockaway Village Board for providing free parking and for all the kind support and cooperation. Their actions are the essence of true partnership.

Most of all, thank you, East Rockaway residents and all who participated. We couldn’t have done ER4LA without all of you!
