Long Beach ‘paying it forward’

To date, Harris said that he has raised about $1,600, and it is one of many fundraisers that are being held throughout the country to support the Newtown community.

“It spread from the sanitation, highway, beach maintenance, fire, police and other departments,” Harris said. “Every supervisor spoke to their men and no one hesitated to come out with $20. We’re looking to raise between $3,000 and $4,000.”

Harris said that he and other city workers intend to drive to Newtown on Friday and present a check to organizers of the fund.

“We’ll probably go to the Police Department up there, and they can give us a better direction of where to go with the check,” he said. “This is mind boggling — everyone is trying to go on with their everyday lives after the hurricane and now this … it just hurts so bad. We took it hard down here and this is the least we can do to show our support.”
