A man who was jogging on the boardwalk on Monday night was beaten and robbed by five men who had accosted the man as he was running by Lincoln Boulevard.

City Manager Charles Theofan said that the incident happened just after 10 p.m.

“There was a man jogging on the boardwalk at around 10:20 p.m. by Lincoln Boulevard,” Theofan said. “He was accosted by five youths, and they punched him in the head and stole his iPod and iPhone.”

Theofan said he was not sure if the man, who was not named, was taken to an area hospital. Long Beach police were called shortly after the incident, Theofan said, adding that though no arrests have been made at this time, an investigation is underway.

According the blog, Seabythecity.com, there were reports that the victim was robbed at gunpoint. Theofan said that a gun was not used in the attack. He added that it was unclear if the incident was gang-related, but said that such incidents are rare in the city.

On Wednesday, the Long Beach Police Department said that detectives are investigating the robbery, saying that the incident occurred at about 10:44 p.m. along the east 400 block of the boardwalk on Sept. 19.

Police said that the victim reported that he was jogging when he was attacked by a group of about five young men.

The youths surrounded the victim and then kicked and punched him, resulting in abrasions to his knees and elbow, police said. The attackers also stole the victim's iPhone, police said, adding that some of the suspects fled the scene on bicycles, while others made off on foot.

The suspects are described as black males between 14 to 19 years-of-age. The Long Beach Police Department's Detective Division is investigating the incident and asking anybody with information in connection with this robbery to contact the Long Beach Police Department's TIPS line at (516) 705-7370.
