Nassau County Police rescued two people and their dog from Reynolds Channel Tuesday morning, after their boat capsized off the shores of Long Beach.

According to police, the department’s Marine Bureau received a distress call at 11:20 a.m. that a 21-foot Wellcraft boat overturned near the Meadowbrook 3 Bridge. The crew — which had assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard, Town of Hempstead constables and TowBoatUS — pulled the two victims from the water, who advised the officers that their 14-month-old dog was missing.

After an initial search for the dog was unsuccessful, officers — believing the dog was trapped underneath the vessel — secured the boat in place to prevent a break in any potential air pocket. Upon righting the ship, the dog was found alive inside the boat, and rescuers then transported the two people and the cane corso to Mako Marine in Freeport.

Both victims refused medical treatment and took their dog to an animal hospital for evaluation.
