Carey holds off Long Beach

Zorn, Locicero lead Seahawks

After Carey’s 13-point halftime lead was cut to five early in the fourth quarter of last Saturday’s Nassau Conference II game at Long Beach, the Seahawks could no longer rely on their defense or the clock.

Fortunately, they had the legs of senior running back Rob Zorn and senior quarterback Michael Locicero to help them finish the job. Zorn capped an 11-play scoring drive with a 5-yard touchdown run with 6:11 remaining to regain a two-score lead for Carey in a 19-14 victory that wasn’t sealed until the final minute.

Zorn carried seven times for 30 yards and Locicero added 21 yards on four attempts in the crucial possession that answered Marines senior quarterback Tom Rowley’s 36-yard touchdown pass — to freshman Chris Parler — and two-point conversion run.

“We’ve got a resilient bunch of kids,” Carey head coach Mike Stanley said after his team improved to 4-2. “Long Beach is dangerous and we knew we’d be in for a battle. It was huge that we came back and scored after they got on the board. We needed it because they got another [touchdown.]”

Zorn (117 yards) had touchdown runs in the first and second quarters and also led the defense with 11 tackles. Locicero added 134 yards on the ground as blustery conditions at Long Beach Middle School limited the air attack for both teams.

“Zorn can really run the ball,” Marines head coach Scott Martin said. “We didn’t think their quarterback could run it the way he did. He did a great job. I’m proud of the way our guys fought. I told them to remember this because I think there’s a chance we’ll see Carey in the playoffs.”

Long Beach, which put up 50 points in a victory over Jericho in Week 5, was blanked by the Seahawks through three quarters but struck quickly on its first offensive series of the fourth. Following a third down quick kick by Locicero, the Marines started at their own 36 with 10:22 remaining. Rowley sandwiched gains of eight and nine yards around senior Peter Amabile’s 11-yard plunge up the middle, moving the chains to the Carey 36. He then found Parler on a slant to get the hosts on the board. It was 13-8 after Rowley’s conversion run.
