City updates residents following Hurricane Irene

Posted

As of Sunday afternoon, Long Beach City Manager Charles Theofan has lifted the mandatory evacuation. All bridges are open, however, we are asking that residents please take their time returning in order to leave ample time for our crews to start cleaning up debris in the area.

If you are without power, LIPA has dispatched crews to the area and are in the process of working to restore power. Please note that many stores are not open and you may need to purchase food or supplies before your return.

There will be an evening high tide between 7 and 8 p.m. and there is a potential for more water intrusion in the city. Please be cautious with respect to weakened trees and damaged tree limbs.

On Monday, we expect the return of city services, except for some minor disruptions, however the Ocean beach park will remain closed.

If you were evacuated to a shelter by a city bus, arrangements are being made now for the return trip.

Please use 911 for police and medical emergencies only. If there is a need for further updates the City will keep residents informed via our Swift 911 program, our storm information hotline by pressing option 1, the local news stations, as well as Facebook and Twitter. A city representative is available on Sunday from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. by dialing extension 1001.
