The Surfrider Foundation, along with many other local groups, held a beach cleanup this past Sunday, to rid the beach of garbage and debris ahead of the start of the summer season.

The cleanup was scheduled for Friday, but the weather was uncooperative, and rain drove the event back to Sunday. The Surfider Foundation, along with Project 11561, Waves 4 Water, the Long Beach Surfers Association, Skudin Surf, Surf 2 Live and the City of Long Beach, met at Lafayette Beach at 8 a.m. to start combing the beach for junk. Volunteers found tires, rusted metal and garbage. Surfers in the water even gathered plastic bags from the waves.

Many civic associations around the city, including the North East Bay and Canal Civic Association, the West End Neighbors Civic Association the West End Beautification Association and the Westholme Civic Association, also held neighborhood cleanups, to brighten up the streets around town.
