Coast Guard take buoy away

Posted

On Sept. 15, the National Guard and the Coast Guard, assisted by the Long Beach Police Department, removed a buoy that had washed ashore at Long Beach Boulevard beach. The buoy was originally stationed at Jones Beach Inlet, but reached the shore when Hurricane Bill rumbled up the East Coast in August. About 20 feet long and weighing 6,500 pounds, the buoy was lifted by a Black Hawk helicopter to the Coast Guard vessel, the USCGC Katherine Walker, a 225 ft. buoy tender stationed off shore.
