A few weeks after City Council Vice President Anthony Eramo announced his candidacy for the open 20th Assembly District seat, the Working Families Party voted to endorse him this week to replace newly elected State Sen. Todd Kaminsky.

“Anthony Eramo has proven himself a tireless champion for working families on the South Shore and throughout New York State, and we couldn't be more excited to endorse his campaign for State Assembly so that he can continue that work,” said Bill Lipton, the New York Working Families Party state director, in a statement. “Anthony will be part of a powerful and progressive team along with Senator Kaminsky who will stand up for Long Island and fight for good jobs and stronger communities. We look forward to doing all we can to elect Anthony as the next great Assembly member from Long Island.”

Eramo, a Democrat, previously ran for the seat in 2014, but dropped out of a Democratic primary and supported Kaminsky, who was elected to the Assembly that year. Eramo faces a primary against former County Legislator Jeff Toback, a Democrat who also announced his candidacy last month and said he has no intention of dropping out of the race. Also considering a run for the seat is Sam Pinto, a career firefighter in Long Beach and president of the Eastholme Civic Association.

“The Working Families Party has a successful track record both electing progressive Democrats and winning important legislation like raising the minimum wage and establishing Paid Family Leave for all New Yorkers,” Eramo said in a statement. “I am proud to have the support of an organization with a record of taking on tough fights against special interests. I am grateful for their support of my campaign, and look forward to building a broad coalition of support in the South Shore.”

The Nassau County Democratic Committee announced they were backing Eramo last month, and the Nassau Independence Party has also jumped on board to endorse the West End resident this week.

“…Anthony espouses all the qualities we value in our leaders; he will work tirelessly in service to all of his constituents,” Nassau Independence Party and Chairman Rick Bellando said in a statement. “Anthony is committed to lowering our taxes and to raising school funding.”

The primary elections for the seat will be held on Sept. 13 and the general election takes place on November 8.
