HS football: Week 2

Posted

Defending Conference I champion East Meadow picked up where it left off, rolling to a 41-6 victory over Hempstead in the 2012 opener behind Billy Andrle's 121 yards rushing and three touchdowns. But the Jets face a much more difficult challenge in Week 2 when they travel to Oceanside for a 6 p.m. kickoff on Friday. The Sailors got four touchdown passes from quarterback Tom Capone in their season-opening 42-6 win at Valley Stream Central.

The showdown in Oceanside is one of six games countywide under the lights on Friday. Also in Conference I, Baldwin, off a 40-0 rout of Uniondale, travels to Farmingdale for a 6:30 p.m. start. Calhoun visits Westbury at 5 p.m. in Conference II action, and South Side will try to carry its momentum from a 26-18 come-from-behind victory over Sewanhaka when it goes to Floral Park for a 7:30 p.m. start in Conference III. In Conference IV, Malverne battles Island Trees at 7 p.m.

Among Saturday's big games is a rematch of last year's Conference II first-round playoff matchup between Carey and Long Beach. The Seahawks bested the Marines twice in 2011, and both teams are coming off impressive Week 1 triumphs. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m. at Long Beach Middle School. Also in Conference II, Elmont is home against defending champion Garden City, and Mepham hosts Kennedy.

Defending Conference III champion Lawrence hosts Lynbrook. The Golden Tornadoes (two) and Owls have combined for three county titles in as many years. Lawrence blew out Glen Cove in the opener, with sophomore Jordan Fredericks scoring five touchdowns, while the Owls cruised past Carle Place behind Danny Kelly's 169 yards rushing and two scores.

In Conference IV, a rematch of last year's playoff semifinal game between defending champ Roosevelt and Valley Stream North is on tap. The Spartans are home for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff. Both teams won big in Week 1. Another key matchup takes place in West Hempstead as Clarke comes to town. It's the Rams vs. the Rams, and both are 1-0.
