Down three touchdowns with less than eight minutes to go in the first half, No. 5 Lynbrook stormed back against Conference III top-seed Lawrence, scoring 42 unanswered points to win, 49-35.

Lynbrook senior quarterback Tom DeNapoli led the attack for the Owls, rushing for 214 yards and a career-high five touchdowns on 21 carries. Senior running back Matt Wohlmacher contributed a five-yard touchdown run that put the visitors ahead for good just before halftime. Junior running back Travis Lock busted out a 60-yard touchdown run with 6:06 remaining to seal the upset victory. Lynbrook, 2-0, totaled 414 yards on the ground. Lawrence senior quarterback John Kinder rushed for 135 yards and three scores.

Freeport 7, Baldwin 0

By ANDREW McCLURE

One of the most intense football rivalries in Nassau was cranked up again as the Baldwin took the 1.6 mile drive to Freeport for the annual backyard brawl with the defending Conference I champion Red Devils.

Both teams put over 40 points on the board in their respective openers, but this one wasn’t the shootout that many among the standing room only crowd at Freeport High School had anticipated. Senior running back Kevin Allen’s touchdown run early in the second quarter was the game’s only score as the top-seeded Red Devils knocked off the Bruins, 7-0. Senior Alonzo Holcombe had 77 yards on the ground in defeat.

Long Beach 34, V.S. Central 14

By TONY BELLISSIMO

Big plays on special teams and impressive running by junior Damon Whitfield propelled Long Beach to a 34-14 Conference II football victory over Valley Stream Central at Firemen’s Field.

The Marines hit paydirt on the first play of the game on a 65-yard kickoff return by senior Jay Ford and never looked back en route to evening their record at 1-1. Junior Derrick Patton capped a 28-point opening half with a 45-yard punt return for a score, and the defense forced four turnovers. The Eagles, who fell to 0-2, managed two late touchdown drives.
