The Long Beach Fire Department responded to a house fire at the 200 block of Neptune Boulevard near East Beech Street on Friday at approximately 12:50 p.m., after the homeowner called the police and reported smoke coming from her attic.

Fire officials urged residents to stay clear of the area and temporarily closed off a small section of Neptune Boulevard as they fought the fire, which was under control in about 20 minutes and extinguished, according to Scott Kemins, commissioner of the fire department.

Kemins was first on the scene and notified incoming units that smoke and flames were visibly coming through an outside vent. The fire was located in the ceiling of the living room, as firefighters did their best to contain the small blaze to the attic above and ventilate the house to remove interior smoke after the fire was put out.

The fire was deemed non-suspicious and the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office determined the cause to be electrical, fire officials said. The homeowner, Lynn Salvage, a longtime resident who co-owns the house with her son, was alone when she returned home and discovered the smoke, and was not injured.

“They did a remarkable job putting this fire out with minimizing the damage to our possessions and our furniture,” said Salvage, who grew up in Long Beach. “Their behavior could not have been more professional, they could not have been more kind and considerate, and they could not under the circumstances have done a better job, so I’m very grateful.”
