Twelve local bowlers are set to compete at the state bowling competition in Elmira, scheduled for March 4, following the Nassau County High School Singles Tournament, hosted by Garden City Bowl on Feb. 11.

Thirty-six of the county’s top high school bowlers competed in the tournament, and the top six female and male bowlers will advance to the state tournament.

Competitors on the men’s team include Tommy Genova of Elmont, who averaged 223 for a 1,343 series at the singles tournament, finishing sixth; Nick Mayo of Lawrence, who finished fifth; Thomas Bianco, of the Bellmore/Merrick School District, who finished fourth; Jeff Rosenhack of Bethpage, who finished third; Samuel Kaplan of Roslyn, who finished second; and Matthew Farber, who finished first, averaging 247 with a total of 1,285 and a 300 in game 4. Genova is the only bowler from the Sewanhaka district who qualified for the state tournament.

Competing for the girls’ team at the state tournament are Kristina Genova, Genova’s sister; Daniele Roca; Morgan Roth; Rebecca Gotterbarn; Gerry Roth; and Amanda Esteves.

Prior to the singles tournament, on Feb. 4, the Sewanhaka High School boys’ bowling team placed fifth at the Nassau County High School Team Tournament, which was hosted by Garden City Bowl. The team took first place at the county tournament in 2010 and 2011.

After finishing in second place last year, the Sewanhaka girls’ bowling team dominated this year’s county tournament. Following an early lead in the first game — by 56 pins — they finished with a final lead of 278 pins. The bowlers will now compete at the state High School Team Tournament in Waverly, scheduled for March 2.
