Irish-Italian night

St. Mary’s Church is host an Irish/Italian Night from 6 to 9 p.m. on March 20 in the parish hall, at Monroe Boulevard and East Park Avenue. There will be music, dancing, a 50/50 raffle, food and the cost is only $15 for adults, $5 for children over 12 and children under 12 are free. For information call Joanne at 432-3906.

Insurance meeting

Nassau County Legislator Denise Ford and representatives from the State of New York Insurance Department to answer your questions about life, health, automobile and homeowners insurance at 7 p.m. on March 18 at Long Beach City Hall. For information contact Ford’s office at 571-6204.

Learn diabetes self-management

Rachel Ferdinand, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator and serves as the director of the Diabetes Education Center at Long Beach Medical Center, will conduct an educational program for anyone with diabetes, whether they are newly diagnosed or have had diabetes for years. The classes are on March 23, 25 and April 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. For information call 897-4354.

Learn to cope

The declining economy, loss of employment and diminished savings has many people experiencing anxiety or depression for the first time in their lives. It’s understandable given that we’re living in a recession that has lasted more than a year and shows limited signs of improvement. To help individuals understand the emotional impact of these changes and learn effective coping strategies and treatments, Long Beach Medical Center is offering free, confidential anxiety and depression screenings every Wednesday from 2 to 3 p.m. For more information call 897-1270.

On Broadway — a musical review

The Island Park Theatre Group, in concert with The Island Park Schools Recreation Department, will proudly present "On Broadway — A Musical Revue!" featuring local talent of all ages from all communities. Come and experience Broadway-style singing and dancing at a fraction of the cost — and ten times the fun! Performances will be March 19 and March 20, 8 p.m.; and an encore matinee on Sun., March 21, 3 p.m. at the Lincoln Orens School Middle School, at 150 Trafalgar Blvd. in Island Park. New group meets

The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Center of Long Beach will hold its inaugural meeting at the Long Beach Public Library on Mar. 24 at 6 p.m. 

Torah classes

Temple Beth-El, at 570 W. Walnut St. in Long Beach, is offering free Torah classes on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. in the smorgasbord room. For information call 432-1678.

The Duprees

The Duprees will give a live performance at St. Mary's parish hall at East Park Avenue and Monroe Boulevard on April 24 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $40. For information call 432-0157 or 889-6311. 

Landmark dinner

The Long Beach Island Landmarks Association will host a recognition dinner at Matteo’s, at 777 West Beech Street, from 5 to 9 p.m. on April 25. Honorees are City Manager Charles T. Theofan, Mary Giambalvo, Dr. Lowell Taubman and Richard Ross. The program includes dinner with wine, dessert, entertainment and guest speakers. The cost is $65. Museum trip

Census help

A representative from the U.S. Census Bureau will be available in the library to provide assistance in filling out the 2010 censusquestionnaire on March 19 from 2 to 5 p.m.

The magic of spices

Learn how to use herbs and spices to create delicious, healthful meals that you can enjoy every day, even if you don’t have much time to spend in the kitchen on March 20 from 1 to 3 p.m. There will be a $5 charge for ingredients.

The mysteries of Easter Island

Easter Island is the most isolated, populated land mass on earth. The magnificent sculptured stone statues (moai) and stone platforms are its outstanding features. The island’s population peaked at about 1400. Lecturer Dr. John H. Loret is a marine biologist holding degrees from New York University, the University of Connecticut and the University of Oslo, Norway. He is director of the Science Museum of Long Island. His presentation will be at 2 p.m. on March 22.

Chi Gong: Chinese healing

Marianna Farina, Tai Chi/dance instructor, will lead you on a journey to peace and calmness. Chi Gong helps restore energy flow, enhances the immune system and promotes relaxation. Dress comfortably for this class that starts at 1:30 p.m. on March 23.

Tribute to Peggy Lee

Vocalist Diane Hoffman salutes actress, songwriter and sultry singer Peggy Lee, performing such selections as “I Don’t Know Enough About You,” “Big Spender,” “Why Don’t You Do Right,” “Fever” and more at 2:30 p.m. on March 21.

Culture wars

In these tumultuous times, this phrase has been used to describe the fundamentalist Islamist actions and views which attack the West, the United States, and Israel. Also this phrase has been used to describe the internal conflict within the United States between the “liberal left” and the “conservative right” political and social differences. However, there are many more situations which can fall into the Culture War category of conflict: the growing gaps between rich and poor and between employed and unemployed are causing much strain in this country and the world. Speaker Howard Shurdut has been lecturing on current events for over ten years. He’ll talk at 2 p.m. on March 25.

The Presidents’ mothers Part II:

Behind every man, there is a woman. In the case of our American Presidents, this maxim is especially true, but the woman is not necessarily his wife. From the humanitarian ideals of Lillian Carter,to the strength of Dorothy Bush, this program is a view of the relationships and influences these women had in shaping the personalities of American Presidents. Lecturer Martha Kolodkin, taught American history for thirty-two years at 2 p.m. on March. 24.

The Long Beach Art League will put on an exhibit called "Dreamscapes” at the library on March 27.

Quilts seminar

Join seniors in a series of workshops on the amazing quilts crafted by descendants of slaves in Gee’s Bend, Alabama. Students will make their own quilts out of paper and a quilt square out of fabrics. Gee’s Bend Quilts will be taught by Elizabeth Connolly on Thursdays in February from 9:15 to 10:45 a.m.

Line dancing

Exercise your mind and your body by attending Line Dancing With Lori, led by instructor Lori Shapiro. Some line dance experience is suggested for this program.

Seated tai chi

Instructor Judith Weitz invites Long Beach seniors to join her program and learn to tone and stretch all their muscles without putting stress on their knees, feet, thighs or back. Seated tai chi is scheduled on Thursdays starting at 11 a.m.

Music that makes you move

Movement to music is an enjoyable way to exercise and feel better. This action-oriented program, led by instructor Lisa Wisel, is suitable for all seniors. Class sessions are scheduled for Wednesdays at 1 p.m.

Start saving money now! Hot off the presses is the Senior Friendly Establishments List for 2010, prepared by the Long Beach Advisory Board for Seniors. It includes close to 40 local businesses that offer discounts to seniors. Pick up a copy at the 2nd floor main office at the senior center.

Easter egg hunt

The Rec Dept.’s 49th Annual Easter Egg Hunt will start at 10 a.m. on March 27 at 10 a.m. The hunt will take place at the Recreation Center fields, located on Magnolia Boulevard at the bay. In the event of inclement weather, the hunt will be scheduled for March 28.
