Special Events
Memorial Day parade
The City of Long Beach will pay tribute to our veterans at the annual Memorial Day Parade on May 31. This year Iraq and Afghanistan veteran SSG Alfred Palmieri will lead the parade as grand marshal and City Manager Charles Theofan will act as Master of Ceremonies. The parade begins at Ohio Avenue and West Beech Street at 9:30 a.m. and ends at the reviewing stand on West Park Avenue in front of City Hall. Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, Jewish War Veterans and AMVETS will be joined by city, county and state officials.
Gospel explosion
Celebrate gospel music as the Evangel Revival Community Church hosts the 8th Annual Gospel Explosion at Kennedy Plaza outside Long Beach City Hall starting at 1 p.m. on June 5. The event will feature gospel music and the artist affiliated with it, along with vendors, food, dance, poetry, and other activities that the entire family can enjoy. Family fair
Cruzada Evangelica Misionera Church, at 265 Long Beach Blvd., will hold a family fair at Kennedy Plaza outside City Hall from 12 to 7 p.m. on June 19. There will be food, health screenings, insurance information, jewelry, baskets. For information call 698-6915.
Farmers market returns
The farmers market will have its season opening in Kennedy Plaza, outside Long Beach City Hall. The market will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. each Wednesday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays until November. In addition to fresh fruit, vegetables, juices, organic bread and fish, market vendors will offer glass bottled milk and other dairy products, hand made body care soaps and lotions. VFW anniversary party
The Long Beach Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 1384 will celebrate their 75th anniversary on June 12 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Long Beach VFW Hall on West Park Avenue. Please join them for a fun evening of food, open bar and music by Sal Vivo and Friends performing the best of classic rock-n-roll. Yoga on the beach
Nickerson Beach Park will host yoga classes in June. Registration for the classes have started on a first-come, first-serve basis until the class is filled, or until it begins on June 1. The one-hour class will be held on three successive Tuesdays on June 1, 8 and 15 at 10 a.m. on the beach or inside in the event of rain. The fee for the classes is $18 plus parking. Artists wanted for fine arts show
The City of Long Beach is preparing for its 16th annual Fine Arts Show, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday June 12 and 13 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Kennedy Plaza. The art committee invites artists to present and sell their work, including oils, acrylics, watercolor, pastel, mixed media, drawings, prints, sculpture and photography. Crafts and jewelry will not be accepted. A single space (10x15) costs $150 for the two-day event. For information call 431-1000.
Atlantic City trip
The Avanti Society is organizing a trip to the Showboat Casino in Atlantic City on Aug. 4. The cost is $30 a person with a $20 coin return. Seats are limited. For information call 889-5086.

Art exhibit
The Long Beach Art League presents "The Leona Post Memorial Exhibit,” a juried member's exhibition, judged and critiqued by Franklin Hill Perrell, curator of the Nassau County Museum of the Arts at 7:30 p.m. on June 2 The exhibit will be on display through June 23.

Learning boating safety
The library will play host to a boating safety course on June 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All instructors are certified by and are members of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. To register call Bill Kelly at (772) 214 - 4899.
Poet-author reads
Poet and author Eleanor Lerman, the award-winning author of five books of poetry and two collections of short stories, will give a reading at 2 p.m. on June 5.
Introduction to computers

Open jazz jam
Jazz musicians will entertain at the senior center on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Send inquiries, or requests to be placed on the band’s email list to nick@nickara.com.
Flowers and gardening
Seniors can plant a variety of summer flowering and foliage plants in a gardening workshop led by horticultural therapist Mary Quinn. There will be a discussion on the use and care of annual plants in the outdoor landscape. The workshop is scheduled for May 27 at 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Basic drawing
Long Beach seniors can improve their drawing skills with supportive instructor Marilyn Kestin on at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesdays in April.

Exercise classes

The Rec is offering two adult courses this spring, a yoga/pilates class and a boot camp will be held in the Teen Center (above the Ice Arena) on weekday evenings and weekend mornings. Registration is at the Rec’s swimming pool, at Magnolia Boulevard and West Bay Drive. The fee is $50 for Long Beach residents; $100 for non-residents.
City Managers race
The Rec will sponsor the 34th annual City Managers10-Mile Trophy Run, “A Salute to Our Veterans,” on May 30 at 8 a.m. Early registration fee is $20 before May 28 at 5 p.m. at the Recreation Center on Magnolia Boulevard at West Bay Drive. Late registration will be at the Long Beach Community Center, at 650 Magnolia Blvd., next to the Rec beginning at 6:30 a.m. You can also register online at www.active.com. Men’s soccer tournament
A Men’s 8 v 8 Soccer league starts June 27, and the Long Beach Recreation department is holding this small-side soccer competition for players 18 and over. Team applications will be accepted through June 15. The fee is $600 per team. For information, call the Rec at 431-5533.
