The Long Beach Professional Firefighters union, Local 287, have been asking their community to help them “Fill the Boot” for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

On the weekends of July 14 and 15, and August 25 and 26, the members of the Long Beach Professional Fire Department were out on the streets at the intersection of East Park Ave and Long Beach Blvd, collecting donations from the Long Beach community.

They also hosted fundraising softball tournaments on July 7 and Aug. 16. Currently the Long Beach Professional Fire Fighters have raised a total of $28,220 to help people in the local community living with neuromuscular disease.

Due to the tremendously successful fund-raising efforts of the Long Beach Professional Firefighters, firefighters Charles Gusler and Local 287 President Bill Piazza appeared on CNBC to ring the closing bell at NASDAQ on Aug. 28.

The International Association of Fire Fighters, IAFF, have been conducting Fill the Boot campaigns to support MDA since 1954. With the efforts of many IAFF unions across the country, Fill the Boot has become one of the biggest nationwide fundraising programs that support MDA. The Long Beach Professional Fire Fighters, comprised of just 25 members, has been one of the top fundraising IAFF firehouses in New York State over the past few years and they hope to become the highest fundraising IAFF Fire Department in New York State in 2012.

MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education. MDA combats neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive medical and support services, and far-reaching professional and public health education. MDA supports families, children and adults affected by muscular dystrophy and related conditions. All of the money that is raised locally remains in the local community to help the more than 2,400 local families served by the Long Island MDA office.
