A Long Beach resident who was struck by a vehicle on Aug. 18 at the intersection of Louisiana and West Beech streets died of his injuries at Nassau University Medical Center last week.

Police said that a 2001 Chevrolet had struck the victim, 55-year-old James McGeehan, of Long Beach, and his dog, at 11:05 p.m. in the area of Louisiana Street and West Beech Street. When Long Beach police officers arrived on the scene, McGeehan was “semi-conscious” in the street, his white dog alongside of him.

Police said McGeehan was taken to Nassau University Medical Center for treatment. On Aug. 22, police said the Nassau County Medical Examiner notified the Long Beach Department’s Detective Division that McGeehan had died as a result of complications from multiple injuries due to blunt force trauma.

The dog was killed at the scene, and removed by an animal control officer, police said. Police impounded the Chevrolet for an inspection during the investigation, and police said that the incident does not appear to be criminal at this time. No charges were filed against the driver, who had stopped and remained at the scene, police said. Police did not release further details.
