Point Lookout-Lido Firefighters battle house fire

The Point Lookout-Lido Fire Department responded to a house fire at 5 Redan Road in Lido Beach on Dec. 30.

According to Chief Brian Guerin of the Point Lookout-Lido Fire Department, after a blaze broke out on the second floor of the home, firefighters from Point Lookout-Lido's first engine immediately rushed out to extinguish the fire.

Firefighters arrived on scene within three minutes, and were assisted by firefighters from the Long Beach, Freeport, Island Park and Baldwin fire departments. Members of Atlantic Beach Rescue also assisted. In total, 40 firefighters were on hand, Guerin said.

"There was a good amount of fire, you could see smoke from several miles away," Guerin said. "The occupants got outside quickly. We had a hose line in there fairly quickly."

Firefighters were on scene for two hours. No injuries were reported, Guerin said. The fire, he said, was under control within thirty minutes, but the cause remains unknown.

"We don't know what the cause was, it started on the rear of the house," he said, adding that it was deemed not suspicious. "Much of the house is still intact - the fire was contained to the second floor of the house."

Guerin added, "Any fire is bad," he said, "but around the holiday season, it's salt in the wound."
