A power outage struck Long Beach at about 8 a.m. on Friday, knocking energy out in about 1,000 homes as well as the Long Beach Medical Center, according to the Long Island Power Authority.

A LIPA representative told the Herald the power was lost north of Park Avenue on both the east and west sides of Long Beach Boulevard, as well as a section in Lido Beach.

A LIPA recording estimated that power is expected to be restored by 12 p.m. Friday afternoon, but a LIPA representative told the Herald at 9:50 a.m. that the power would be restored by 10 a.m.

Cheryl Chapman, an assistant administrator at LBMC on East Bay Drive, said that power was lost in one outpatient area and one wing, the west building, which houses the emergency department, a medical unit and the nursing home. While the outpatient area is without a back-generator and was still in the dark at about 9:40 a.m., the west building’s generator has kept the power running.

“We’re just carrying on with normal operating procedures,” Chapman said. “We kind of prepare for this and it is why we have our generator in place. The outpatient area is still in the dark but they are functioning on their emergency backup plans. So everything is good.”

Tommy Beirne, an East Hudson Street resident, said he lost power at about 8:30, but that energy was restore about 45 minutes later. “I’m just surprised,” said Beirne. “I didn’t think it was that windy out.”
