A day before the New York Mets defeated the Chicago Cubs in the first game of the National League Championship Series, another major New York-Chicago rivalry heated up the boxing world.

In what was a thrilling and dramatic 10-round bout at Brooklyn’s Aviator Sports and Events Center last Friday, Long Beach’s own “Irish” Seanie Monaghan maintained his perfect record when he defeated Chicago’s Donovan “Da Bomb” George and took home the vacant North American Boxing Organization light heavyweight title.

The fight, promoted by Top Rank, was considered one of the most important in Monaghan’s professional career, and the win by unanimous decision brings him a step closer to a shot at the word title.

“It’s going to be something big,” said Monaghan, who also retained his WBC Continental Americas title.

Last Saturday’s fight drew huge crowds of Monaghan’s Long Beach supporters and was broadcast live on truTV as the main event of “The MetroPC Friday Night Knockout on truTV.” Monaghan kept the pressure on George throughout the fight with jabs, combinations and uppercuts that tired George out.

Both fighters sustained injuries early on; Monaghan dealt with a nasty cut above his eye after the two butted heads in the second round, while George appeared to have injured his right hand in the third.

“I was excited about the matchup and I knew he was a good opponent,” Monaghan said after the fight. “I knew he was going to be a challenge, but it actually wasn’t a challenge in the end. If he had three good hands he wouldn’t have been able to beat me.”
