Snow impacts school calendar

Students lose a vacation day in May

Students in the Long Beach School District got three school days to play in the snow this winter, but that means one less day vacation day in May.

The district allocates two snow days each year and each additional day is taken from a Spring vacation. With the heavy snow this season, the schools had to cancel classes for three days. Students will now be required to attend school on May 28, the Friday before Memorial Day weekend.

“Years like this, while not frequent, are anticipated when we build our calendars and prepare our budgets,” said Superintendent Dr. Robert Greenberg when asked how this snow-filled winter compared to others.

With Spring on the way, but more snow in the forecast, if the weather forces the district to close its doors, days will then be taken from the end of Spring recess starting April 6. Greenberg said that the snow has not affected the school calendar in terms of curriculum, standardized tests or meetings, and is well under budget for snow related expenses, like plowing and salt.
