Long Beach boxer Seanie Monaghan wins again

Following a brief hiatus after the birth of his son in May, Long Beach pro boxer Seanie Monaghan has resumed his juggernaut-like career in the ring, one in which the light heavyweight has emerged victorious from each fight — he’s currently 8-0 with five technical knockouts — since he began his professional boxing career last year.

Just before the main bout featuring junior welterweight Gabriel “Tito” Bracero and Danie van Staden on July 30, Monaghan defeated Brian Bernard — winning by a knockout at a minute and a half into the first round — at the Aviator Sports & Events Complex in Brooklyn. Clearly, fatherhood hasn’t made him soft.

“The training was really hard because it was my first, six-round fight,” said Monaghan, who trained for six weeks at the Freeport PAL with renowned coach Joe Higgins. “We were doing more rounds — I did six, four minute rounds with a kid who made it to the Olympic team, and I sparred with him Tuesday before the fight.”

Monaghan said that squaring off against Bernard — who has six knockouts under his belt — had its challenges.

“The guy had 20 fights, and I was concerned that he had more experience than me and that he would try to drag the fight out — and drag me into deep water,” Monaghan said.

“But I’ve been training so hard, and I don’t know if it’s a mental thing, but I refuse to let anything beat me.” Monaghan said that fatherhood has made him even “hungrier” as he trains for his fights.

“Now, I wake up and look at my son, and everyday I’m hungrier,” he said. “It helps me get through a tough training, and that helps you win fights.”

Monaghan’s next fight is slated for Oct. 1 in Atlantic City, just before Sergio Martinez defends his middleweight belt in HBO’s main event. Monaghan’s fights typically draw a large group of supporters from Long Beach, and he said he expects a big turnout for his next fight in New Jersey.

“We may get a bus that leaves the West End on Irish Day,” he laughed.
