Volunteers rebuild Magnolia Park

Community rallies around Sandy-damaged playground

Last Saturday, the City of Long Beach, KaBOOM!, JetBlue Airways and Surf for All teamed up to rebuild Magnolia Playground, which was destroyed during Hurricane Sandy. Hundreds of volunteers, both members of the organizations and local residents, helped saw, hammer and paint until the playground was complete. The event stretched across three days. The park was prepped for two days, and the entire playground went up in less than six hours. Volunteers also painted a mural that paid homage to the city and the old boardwalk. And both kids and adults got to add their personal touch to the wall by using their handprints to paint. The new playground’s design is based on drawings created by children who participated in a Design Day event in March.
