Lynbrook High School’s Facing History and Ourselves Club has launched its second annual campaign to raise money for impoverished schools in Northern Uganda. They will once again be working through an international relief organization called Invisible Children that builds schools and provides scholarships for poor and orphaned children who would otherwise not receive an education.

During the third budget work session for the Lynbrook School District, officials detailed that facilities costs in the 2010-11 budget have decreased by five percent, the elementary science program will be redesigned, and five teachers in the district will be excessed due to a projected decrease in enrollment.

Sal Canepa dances in his head — but not before he listens to the tune about a half dozen times and then, painstakingly and intricately, puts each step on paper. Canepa is now working with the cast of Island Park Theatre Group’s “On Broadway — A Musical Revue,” which features full, well-known songs from 29 Broadway musicals.

The Lynbrook School District's tentative budget increase from this year to next is 3.45 percent, but until state aid numbers are finalized, they cannot determine the tax levy increase, officials say. The increase from the 2008-09 spending plan to 2009-10 was 3.24 percent.

South Shore begins digging out

Yet another storm has reminded us that northeast winters can be brutal. This latest blast began Thursday afternoon in Nassau as rain, then heavy rain, and then as temperatures fell, morphed into snowflakes. Inch-by-stormy-inch, the snow piled up overnight to near a foot or so in western Nassau to somewhat less in mid- and eastern parts of the county.

State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli recently completed audits of New York’s 733 public school districts and BOCES. The audits were part of a series of legislation following a scandal in the Roslyn School District in which administrators embezzled $11 million.

Kevin Glenz loved a challenge. Whether it was wrestling, lacrosse, older brother, Matthew, Kevin would challenge anyone to anything. "He was very competitive," said his father, Larry Glenz, of Long Beach, a longtime and much beloved coach at Lynbrook High School. "But all he ever really wanted was a hug."
