Denise Rogers was sworn in as Lynbrook Chamber of Commerce president last month after joining the Chamber in 2009. She is the branch manager of Astoria Federal Savings in Lynbrook, and lives in the village with her husband Tom and three children.

Rogers took over as Chamber president for Bill Gaylor, owner of the Lyn Gift Shop, who had the role from 2008-12. She has been an active member of the community and has played a key role in organizing several staple events in Lynbrook, including the Chamber’s annual art auction, the Taste of Lynbrook event, while also working with the Wounded Warriors Project, Patriots Weekend in Greis Park and the Chamber’s Theater in the Park event. She said she is fortunate to work for a community bank like Astoria Federal Savings, which is very supportive of her work in the Chamber. In 2011, Rogers was given the title of Lynbrook’s Humanitarian of the Year in addition to being named the Lynbrook/East Rockaway Herald’s Person of the Year two years ago.

The Herald recently sat down with Rogers to ask her about her new role as Chamber president.

What made you want to get involved with the Chamber?
I’ve always enjoyed becoming involved in the communities I’ve worked in. Lynbrook has always held a special place in my heart because I started my career here. My husband [Tom] grew up here and it is now a place where I not only work, it’s where I live.

What made you want to become the Chamber’s president?
I started as a member and Bill Gaylor Jr. asked me if I wanted to serve on the board. Once I was a member of the board he asked me if I wanted to be vice president of special events and then he asked me I would consider becoming executive vice president, and now here I am.
How will your past experiences help you to be a good president?
I think my experiences as an active volunteer with this organization will help me as president. I have always tried to support the needs of the local businesses on a day-to-day basis.

Have you gotten any advice from Bill Gaylor, the past president of the Chamber?
Yes, Bill has encouraged ideas that will help promote business while bringing the community together.
