In the 11th month, on the 11th day, at the 11th hour, the Village of Lynbrook honored its veterans with its annual ceremony at the Dough Boy Memorial, which was attended by veterans, local elected officials and residents.

The Howard Lathrop Post 2307 VFW held its post services for members at 10 a.m. before heading over to the village ceremony. Post Commander Kevin Canty led his first Veterans Day ceremony and spoke about the history of the day, as well as thanking village officials and Assembly Brian Curran for their unwavering support of the veterans.

Ex-Commander Pat Cardone said Lynbrook has always treated the veterans with respect and cared for them. “I’m glad that we live in a town that supports (the veterans) and supports the things that we do,” he said. “It really means a lot to the veterans to see people who aren’t veterans listening, and learning, and taking part in stuff like that.”
   

Cardone said the event was better attended than in years past and had veterans from the Lynbrook VFW, American Legion Lynbrook Post 335 and members of the Marine Corp Veterans.

“Veterans just have a bond that is kind of unexplainable,” Cardone said. “No matter what the age difference is, there’s something special when you come across another veteran.”

Following the conclusion of the ceremony, Mary McNamara’s on nearby Stauderman Avenue hosted veterans for food and drinks.
