East Rockaway selects its school valedictorian

With the highest cumulative grade point average in her class and recognition as a National Merit Scholarship Commended Student and AP Scholar, Diana Sharkey is an extraordinary student and an outstanding member of her graduating class.

Diana has made significant and valuable contributions in the classroom. and has even led the charge to expand programs for her fellow students.

Diana was a primary advocate to reinstate Advanced Placement Italian in thge course offerings, and was one of the first students in the district to participate in the science research program.

Diana participated in a biotechnology program to explore medical research and techniques at Boston University last summer while spending previous summers participating in Youth Leadership Forums, precollege workshops and science research experiences. An exceptional student who is always seeking new opportunities, Diana extended her study of Italian when she was accepted to a selective program that included an experience in Italy during July 2014. Frank Cuttitta, Diana’s Italian teacher, has worked with her since 7th grade. It is a pure joy to have Diana in class,” he said. “She is an insightful scholar, a profound thinker, an articulate writer and speaker, and a passionate learner. She demonstrates these attributes on a daily basis in my class and has done so for years.”

Diana serves as both president of the senior class and president of the entire student council after maintaining leadership positions in both throughout her high school years. She has served as an active member of the academic Quiz Bowl, Foreign Language Club and National Honor Society. She also has been chosen to serve as team captain of both the varsity tennis team and varsity badminton team, while earning coaches’ awards, “Most Valuable Player” awards and All-Conference recognition for both sports. She plays piano, saxophone and alto saxophone in the concert band, jazz band and orchestra pit for the school musical.

The daughter of Joseph and Tiki Sharkey, and sister to Alex, Diana will attend Yale University in the fall. As she reflects on her high school experience, Diana said, “You don’t have to be a high school valedictorian to do what you truly desire with your life. Get involved in meaningful activities, connect deeply with the people around you, have a sense of humor, and always work towards your personal goals. And don’t forget, carpe diem.”
