The Nassau County Department of Health is investigating an influenza associated pediatric death of an East Rockaway district student who died last Friday, according to county spokeswoman Mary Ellen Laurain. The student is said to be a five-year-old kindergartner who attended Centre Avenue School in East Rockaway.

“All of us in the East Rockaway School District mourn the loss of one of our students who passed away …,” said Superintdent of Schools, Dr. Roseanne Melucci. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family during this unexpected tragedy.”

According to information provided by the Nassau County Department of Health, preliminary testing indicates that this death is associated with Influenza. “The Department of Health has advised me that this situation does not pose any increased threat to the health and safety of our students and staff compared to the entire region and community, as influenza is present throughout,” said Melucci.

The district has assembled a crisis team of social workers, psychologists, and other support personnel from all of the schools to assist in supporting the students and staff.

“We will continue to provide support for as long as is necessary,” she said.
