Are you curious about East Rockaway and Lynbrook history? Well, history will be in the making as the Historical Society of East Rockaway and Lynbrook (HSERL) hosts it 5th annual retrospective at the Lynbrook Library, Wed. and Thur., June 6 and 7, and Mon.-Thur., June 11-14. (Bob Sympson is pictured above with students at the 2011 retrospective).

The exhibit will include scale models of the Haviland-Davison Grist Mill Museum and the Bristol and Mexico Monument, an opportunity to “turn the quern,” maps of the two villages during the early 1900’s, historic photos and much more! On special display will be a shield which was presented to the proprietor of East Rockaway’s White Cannon Hotel by his friends in 1913. This 99 year old artifact was recently given to the Historical Society.

During the school day 338 fourth grade students from the seven public and parochial elementary schools will visit the library to participate in a 75 minute interactive program as they learn about two significant events in our communities’ history. Students will learn about two separate shipwrecks, the Mexico and the Bristol, and how they changed maritime history and left a lasting monument in Lynbrook. They will also learn about the building of the East Rockaway Grist Mill in all its parts and the process of grinding wheat seed into flour, which was a major part of the village’s economy. Also each student will have written an essay which will be displayed, as they share ‘a moment in their history.

Residents are encouraged to attend this limited, special 6 day Retrospective event. The exhibit will be open for the public to view and explore in the evenings from 6:30 to 9 p.m. For more information call (516) 887-9094.
