A Long Beach resident was arrested Sunday after he allegedly stabbed a man during an early morning brawl in the West End.

Long Beach police said that the suspect, Shane Cobb, 22, was among a group of men involved in a large altercation near West Beech and Wisconsin streets at 3:59 a.m. Police officers on foot patrol in the area witnessed what was described as a melee on the street and rushed to the scene.

“Officers witnessed some type of fight going on,” said Lt. Mark Stark, a spokesman for the Police Department. “People were screaming and throwing punches at one another. [Officers] noticed that a victim was covered in blood. They noticed an individual running away and apprehended him.”

Stark said that police set up a crime scene in the area, and the investigation is ongoing. Police did not say whether the weapon was recovered. It was not immediately clear what led to the altercation, and police said the fight did not occur in any nearby bars.

The victim, Stark said, was taken to South Nassau Communities Hospital where he was treated for lacerations to his right hand and chest. Stark said that the victim’s injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Cobb was arrested along the 900 block of West Beech Street and charged with assault with intent to cause serious injury with a weapon, second-degree assault with intent to cause physical injury, second-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon with a previous conviction.

Cobb was arraigned in Long Beach City Court on Monday before Judge Frank Dekranis, who set bail at $100,000. He is set to appear in Nassau County Criminal Court on Aug. 28.
