Longtime Lynbrook resident Peter Raymond Sobey died surrounded by family on Oct. 21. He was 79.

Sobey was born to Raymond and Mamie (Hoffmann) Sobey on Nov. 3, 1940, in Queens. He graduated from Sewanhaka High School in 1958 and attended Stevens Institute of Technology, where he was a proud brother of the Sigma Nu fraternity. In 1967, he graduated with a degree in engineering from Brooklyn Polytech.

Sobey began his career at Sperry Corp. and continued onto a 25-year career at Harris Corporation. He was an active member of the 4-H club, a network of youth organizations whose mission is engaging youth to reach their fullest potential while advancing the field of youth development, and attended 4-H camp for many summers as a child, which was a passion that he passed onto his children and grandchildren. He also dedicated many years to being a Boy Scout leader and was an avid Mets fan. Sobey could frequently be found outside in his vegetable garden or spending his days at the beach.

Sobey’s proudest accomplishment was his family and friends. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 60 years, Barbara (Sumperl); his children, Holly (Oettinger), Robin (Boll),  Lisa (Dickes), Donna (Masterson), Scott, Timothy, Joy (Padula), Jenny (Heilbron), Cindy, Daniel, Sarah (Parrott) and Katie (Rodriguez); his 19 grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was predeceased by his son, Christopher.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Bethany Congregational Church in East Rockaway or to Dorothy P. Flint 4-H Camp.
