Lynbrook firefighters extinguish garage fire

The fire was quickly extinguished, and is currently under investigation.

On August 31, Lynbrook volunteers extinguished a fire in a garage just a week after a fire destroyed a storefront a few blocks away.  

Under the command of Chief Michael Hynes, the firefighters, responded to 27 Park Place, off Merrick Road, at 8:46 p.m. for a reported fire in a garage behind the house at the end of the street. Upon arrival, Hynes broadcasted a Signal 10 for a working fire as heavy smoke filled the block. Engine Company 1 was first on the scene and hooked up to the hydrant opposite the home, stretching a line down the driveway to the burning garage. 

The top of one side of the two-car garage was partially broken, and fire was blowing out the top of the door and climbing up the facade. The hose line was used to quickly knock down the fire so firefighters could move into the garage. 

Once inside, firefighters found four propane cylinders, which were carried out to the back lawn. A second hand line, manned by Tally-Ho Engine 3 members, cooled down the propane cylinders. Truck Company respond by way of Harriet Place to the backyard of the Park Place home, pulling through the burning debris and the burnt wood in the garage. 

Although the fire was quickly extinguished, firefighters remained at the scene for nearly two hours until the fire marshal investigated the cause of the fire.  Additionally, HAZMAT members arrived at the scene and inspected the four propane tanks.

The cause of the garage fire is presently under investigation by the fire marshal’s office.
