Lynbrook school newspaper takes 20 awards

Every year, school publications from across New York State submit entries in the Empire State Scholastic Press Association competition, hosted by Syracuse University. Staff members of “Horizon,” the Lynbrook High School newspaper, are pleased to announce that they won a record 20 awards in the 2012 competition, including a silver award for Best All-Around Publication. Students also earned a total of two gold, four silver, five bronze and eight honorable mention awards in individual categories.

Individual gold awards went to Maggie Neal for Best Editorial and Alyssa Glanzer (Class of 2012) for Best News Story. Silver awards were earned by Ryann Moelis for Best Feature Story, Matt Gomm (Class of 2012) for Special Event Coverage, Samantha Sitt for Best Sports Photograph and Dana Fader, Bari Schechter and Samantha Sitt for Best Design Portfolio. Bronze awards went to Joe Hoeffner, Zack Pekale and Bari Schechter for Best Editorial Page, Dana Fader and Alyssa Glanzer for Best Feature Story, Tim Keegan (Class of 2012) for Best Sports New Article, and both Seth Moreida and Kacey Carter (Class of 2012) for Best News Story.

Earning honorable mention awards were Stephanie Mertz for Best Editorial, Ana Gutierrez for Best Feature Story, Nicolai Tayco for Best Cartoon/Illustration, Rosalie Chmiel (Class of 2012) for Best Use of Advertising, Kacey Carter for Best Sports Feature, Skyler Kessler for Best Feature Photograph and Best Sports Photograph, and Natasha Lubczenko for Best News Story.

“This was thrilling news for our Horizon staff,” said adviser Jessica Sanders. “This was an unprecedented amount of awards for us to earn in this competition.”
