Lynbrook High School senior Josh Lewin-Jacus earned two top prizes at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held in San Jose, California.

Competing against 1,500 high school science whizzes from fifty countries, Josh walked away with the prestigious U.S. Naval Research Award as well as a third-place grand award in microbiology, earning him two scholarships totaling $9,000.

Josh’s original research project, entitled “The Effects of Grazer Exclusion on the Colonization of Hard Substrates by Microbial Communities,” studied the driving forces behind the immense diversity in microbial populations. He worked under the supervision of Science Research teacher David Shanker, and was mentored by Dr. Lee Kerkhof and Ms. Lora McGuinness at the Rutgers University Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences.
