Celebrating its 10-year anniversary, Pilates at Body Reformers is one of the original, if not the first, Pilates studios on the South Shore of Long Island. As Yoga is its other specialty, the studio was clearly designed for mind-body fitness.

Body Reformers was founded in 2000 by Dale Eisert and Leslie Cohen. The duo had become friends while working out in a Pilates studio. With that passion in common, and a mutual belief that this form of exercise can work for just about anyone, they decided to open a studio together. Cohen manages the customer service end of the business, and Eisert is a full-time Pilates instructor.

Their staff includes 12 certified instructors who are well- seasoned professionals in the field. Classes are kept small and personalized. The studio is equipped with top-of-the-line Peak equipment.

In addition to their numerous Pilates and Yoga classes, the studio is consistently expanding to include further types of instruction and workshops.

For example, they are adding more Prenatal Pilates, which is designed to help moms-to-be bring balance back into their life, physically and emotionally.

The idea is to stay fit, well-balanced and flexible throughout pregnancy, allowing an easier and quicker return to one’s pre-pregnancy body. More classes involving mother and baby will also be offered. Zumba classes will be added, and teachers will be brought in to hold Master Classes.

Another new offering will be Gyrokinesis, a system of exercise derived from yoga, dance, gymnastics and Tai Chi. A series of rhythmic and undulating movements are combined, which gently and fluidly works the joints and muscles of the body.

Postures are performed smoothly and harmoniously, connecting breath and movement, much like a yogic dance. Breathing patterns are designed to stimulate the nervous system, open energy pathways, oxygenate the blood and strengthen the limbs. After a session the participant feels lighter, rejuvenated and energized.

Yoga classes offered include Hatha, Tween, Vinyasa, Pre-natal and Mom & Baby.

Among the Pilates classes are Cardio Chair, Cardio Ball, Tower (with and without weights), and Stretch & Strengthen. Appointments can be made in person, by phone or online, through their web site. Private and semi-private lessons are also available.
