Students 'Preserve the Reserve"

Posted

On a weekend when many local high schools, including their own, were reveling in the spirit of Homecoming on their football fields, members of Lynbrook High School’s Globe Club were reveling in the spirit of community service as they participated in the National Estuaries Day "Preserve the Reserve Bay Beach Cleanup" at Jones Beach Seal Watch Beach.

The cleanup was sponsored by the American Littoral Society, with assistance from Operation Splash. In addition to collecting trash, students were asked to document the kind of trash that littered the shore and compile data that will be used for devising strategies to combat pollution and increase public awareness and appreciation of the coastal environment.

In 2008, 9,917 volunteers, coordinated by the American Littoral Society, cleaned and documented 168,856 pounds of debris along 387 miles of New York State's shoreline.
