Vote for New Vision candidates in Lynbrook

Posted

When no one steps up to oppose a political team, one must think either that they are unbeatable or that residents are very satisfied with the way things are in the village. Let’s hope it’s the latter. In either case, Lynbrook’s New Vision Party candidates, Bill Hendrick, Alan Beach and Tom Atkinson, are running unopposed in Tuesday’s election, and we urge people to get out and vote for them.
Hendrick, a 30-year resident and a sitting village trustee since 1989, was appointed mayor in January when Brian Curran was elected to the state Assembly. Hendrick appointed Beach as his deputy mayor, and the board appointed Atkinson as trustee.
Although Hendrick has been mayor for only three months, and Atkinson a trustee for the same length of time, we hope they will continue with their promises to reduce taxes and create jobs, and pay attention to the downtown area, including the Regal Cinemas and the MTA-owned vacant properties under the LIRR trestle on Atlantic Avenue — both eyesores for many years. Beach, known as “the silent one,” seems to have a great rapport with the residents and has built up their trust in the last two years.
We applaud the village’s formation of a finance committee and the expanded tax exemptions for seniors and veterans. The village has also earned a AA bond rating for the first time in its history. Roads have been paved and 100 new trees were planted along Merrick Road.
We saw improvements after Curran became mayor, along with a new trust in what was formerly a combative and contentious board. Let’s hope that Hendrick, Beach and Aktinson, along with current board members Hilary Becker and Mike Hawxhurst, continue to work diligently for the residents by keeping an open government and continuing the revitalization of the downtown area, all while holding the line on taxes. The residents deserve no less.
