World War II veteran Louis Forte celebrated his 99th birthday to much fanfare on Feb. 27 as fellow veterans, first responders, elected officials and other residents offered him a drive-by salute.

Forte turned 99 on Feb. 17, and the party, 10 days later, featured several cars and motorcycles riding by the entrance of the Sunrise Senior Living facility in Lynbrook.

Forte is originally from Elmont and met his future wife, Lena, when she was his pen-pal during his time serving in World War II. They have been married for 75 years.

Attendees at Forte’s celebration included American Legion Riders, members of the Nassau County Police Department, Mayor Alan Beach and the village board, Hempstead Town Councilman Anthony D’Esposito and Nassau County Legislator Bill Gaylor.
