Malverne roadway project will be up for bids

After working with engineers for the past several months, the Village of Malverne is in the final stages of creating a bidding document that will request estimates for a complete overhaul of targeted roads throughout the village.

Mayor Patricia McDonald announced at last week’s board of trustees meeting that she expected the document to be ready to go out for bids sometime this week. Once the bidding is advertised, contractors will have the opportunity to submit proposals that will be reviewed by the village and the firm it has hired, VHB Engineering of Hauppauge. McDonald said she anticipates the bid to be finalized in early October, with construction to begin as soon as contracts and insurances are in place.

As of press time, a list of streets targeted for roadwork had not been completed. “Once the target area has been finalized, a copy will be available at Village Hall or on our village website, www.malvernevillage.org,” McDonald said.

The village has been working with New York American Water and National Grid to focus on areas where utilities have recently been upgraded, and where roadway conditions should be addressed.

Since at least 2009, both companies have replaced thousands of feet of water and gas mains in the village, but they are only required to fill in the areas they dig up. “All they’re responsible for is to patch,” Building Superintendent Lou Santora explained. “What we’re looking for is a complete road overhaul, and they aren’t responsible for that, technically.”

The roadwork will also include the reconstruction of curbs and handicap ramps at the end of each sidewalk, because road repaving affects street-to-sidewalk transitions.
