August crime watch in Malverne and West Hempstead

Robbery

•    Two men and one woman were almost robbed while sitting on the front steps of their Eagle Avenue home in West Hempstead, according to police. Detectives said two armed black men approached the pair on Aug. 5 at 10:35 p.m. and demanded they go inside the house. The men, both described as in their 20s and about six feet tall, fled on foot empty-handed when one of the victims told them they were being recorded by video cameras. One wore a red hooded sweatshirt and the other had on a black shirt and a black Yankees cap.
•     A house on Theresa Avenue in West Hempstead was burglarized on Aug. 3 between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., according to police. The perpetrator(s) apparently entered the home through the rear sliding door, which was left open, and escaped with jewelry and coins worth $1,000. 
•     A laptop and a portable radio were stolen from a Lakeview residence between 7 p.m. on Aug. 1 and 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 3. Police said the burglar(s) pried the rear door of the Jefferson Avenue home to carry out the theft.

Repeated robbery

     Two homes on Lester Court and Woodfield Road in West Hempstead were the most recent of a slew of houses targeted by a copper-piping thief, according to police. The fifth precinct reported that eight robberies resulting in a loss of copper piping have occurred in West Hempstead and neighboring communities since mid-February. The most recent incident was at the Lester Court house, which was entered through a side door that was pried open at some point between 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 31 and 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 2. Prior to that, the Woodfield Road house was entered through a broken basement glass door between midnight at 5 p.m. on July 1.
    Other incidents are as follows:

• Feb. 20, around 5:25 p.m., house on Louis Avenue in South Floral Park
• March 4, around 3:45 p.m., house on Woodfield Road in West Hempstead
• Between 11 p.m. on March 25 and 9:30 a.m. on March 27, a house on Roquette Avenue in Elmont
• July 26, around 12:30 p.m., house on Marguerite Avenue in South Floral Park
• Between 8 p.m. on July 29 and 1 p.m. on July 31, house on Dogwood Avenue in West Hempstead
• Between 6 p.m. on July 15 and 5 p.m. on July 22, house on Eagle Avenue in West Hempstead.

Larceny auto
    Two motorcycles were stolen from a shed located on Sylvan Drive in West Hempstead between 8 p.m. on Aug. 1 and 5:50 a.m. on Aug. 2.    

Miscellaneous car theft
    Four tires and rims were stolen from a 2009 Infinity G37 parked on Gold Place in Malverne some time between Aug. 3 and 4, according to police.
