The Malverne Board Education presented Malverne High School student Maxwell Henry with an award for his achievements during its monthly meeting on Oct. 13.

Henry was recently selected as a commended student in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship program. Commended students, school officials said, are recognized for their exceptional academic promise, as demonstrated on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test. Out of the more than 1.5 million students who entered the nationwide competition, only the top 5 percent are given the commended student distinction, according to the program's Web site.
