Grossmann’s Farm officially opened its doors last Saturday after three years of laying fallow.

The 105-year-old farm, now owned by Nassau County and operated by the Nassau Land Trust, is in full bloom and operation for the 2011 growing season.

Farmer Bill Walsh, who was hired to run the farm in August, greeted residents through the day as they stopped by to say hello and purchase various items from the farm stand. Available for purchase were flowers and bedding plants, and spinach and asparagus.

The 5-acre farm, part of which belongs to the Village of Malverne, will continue to operate as one of Nassau County’s only farms, producing fresh fruits and vegetables, including lettuce, tomatoes and strawberries, according to Walsh.

The Nassau Land Trust has also started an education program at the farm for area children and students from throughout the county.
