Long Island stages welcome many interpretations of The Nutcracker

Those visions of sugarplums make their seasonal appearance

Those sugar plum fairies and assorted figments of a young girl’s dream have arrived for the festive season. The holiday classic shines brightly once again with numerous versions to choose from, along with other activities that are sure to bring out that joyful spirit in everyone.
Here are some of the season’s top picks.

The Nutcracker by Leggz Ltd. Dance
In keeping with its tradition, Rockville Centre-based Leggz Ltd. Dance opens The Nutcracker season on Long Island with its annual full-length presentation of the beloved ballet, accompanied by the South Shore Symphony Orchestra. A live 70-piece orchestra performing the glorious Tchaikovsky score always adds to the appeal of this production, which runs for the three performances this weekend.
The Leggz version of the holiday classic, presented with the Rockville Centre Guild for the Arts, features dancers from the Boston Ballet, Washington Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, the Joffrey Ballet, Suzanne Farrell, Mark Morris, New York City Opera, Atlanta Ballet, Alvin Ailey, San Francisco Ballet, Carolina Ballet, Morphoses, Pacific Northwest Ballet, the Broadway show “Movin’ Out,” and Jerome Robbins Broadway. Once again, over 100 young dancers from the metropolitan area join the professional dancers on stage. See the holiday classic Friday through Sunday, Dec. 2-4, at South Side High School, 140 Shepherd St., Rockville Centre.
